Type: Roleplaying (Fantasy)
Rating: 8/10
Has some quirks, but overall a rather good game, definitly one of the better RPGs that are out there. I've even played it a second time without getting bored.
Graphics really do look nice. In fact, the game has one of the nicest looking landscapes I've seen until now. Dungeons and buildings also look pretty good. Try setting brightness rather low, gamma rather high and try a view of 200% or more - you'll think you're really there, especially when it's dark (in the game as well as in your room). Performance is really good too.
If you'll like the mouse, you're out of luck here. The game seems to have been designed for keyboard use only. The keys and key-combinations you'll have to use are rather uncommon, but you'll get used to them after a while and they're not so bad after all. Still could have used some improvement.
Nice and consistent. One of the few games where people actually seem to have to do something and don't just stand around all the time humbly waiting for the Grand Lord Adventurer (you) to talk to them. First game I've ever seen where people actually get annoyed if you step into their houses like they where public toilets ...
Though it's supposed to be a confined prison, the world is rather big, which means, as usual, running around a lot. Yes, that's running. Like in most other games I'd really like to know why there is a "walk" mode. Getting from one place to another takes some time but it is actually fun to do a little sightseeing on the way, at least for the first few times you're there ...
Though the world is big, there is almost no reloading necessary ever. Very good (if there is, it takes a little while though).
Quests involve the inevitable "Bring me this mushroom!" and "Find that magic amulet!" with the usual monster slaying on the way. Normally they fit in the story though and it's somehow fun most of the time.
Nice story. More of that later (perhaps ;-)
When you've mastered the unusual interface and got a better weapon, the battles won't seem so hard anymore. The quests sometimes involve getting the right hints and finding the right person, which can take a while, but are ok normally. Not many real puzzles though ...
Though I have the at least fifteenth incarnation of the game, I'd still rate it one of the most buggy programs I've ever seen. Bugs range from small graphics flaws to real crashes. A whole family of spiders could feed on this game for weeks ... the game's most annoying drawback.
Definitly worth the 0.75 EUR I payed for it! I'd still like to know why the game is called "Gothic" as it doesn't really look that "gothic" to me. Probably just sounded cool ...
